The Conference was organised in cooperation with the Government of Japan, Government of the Republic of Croatia and Regional Government of Istria as a continuation of the four previously held conferences, dealing with the issues of interethnic reconciliation, religious tolerance and human security in the Balkans.

The Conference was chaired by H.E. Prof. Takehiro Togo, President of the Council and attended by 120 participants, prominent academics, government officials and public figures almost from all over the world, as well as high-ranking representatives of the major religious communities in the Balkans. President of the Republic of Croatia, Mr. Stjepan Mesic, opened the Conference, while special messages were sent by Mrs. Sadako Ogata, Chairman of HS Commission (former UN High Commissioner for Refuges), Senior Advisor of the Advisory Board on Human Security of UN and by H.E. Yasushi Akashi, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Former Yugoslavia.

The discussions at the Conference were very open and productive, covering key challenges which still threaten peace and stability in the Western Balkans, but also offering solutions for the improvements in the fields of reconciliation and tolerance building. The presented papers will be published in the separate Conference Proceedings and distributed to all participants.

The Conference was financially supported by the Region of Istria and Japan Foundation.
